Silver content in old UK coins?

There is a lot in this forum about 'junk' US silver coins. Does anyone have any info about old silver British coins when did they stop containing silver, and are any worth collecting for that reason?

Thanks.

I posted something a few weeks back about silver uk junk coins. Basically, anything up to 1920 is about 90% silver, up to 1947 is 50% and after 1947 is 0%.

Leading the pack, get that "barbaric" metal out of the public's hands !

The Bank of Mordor couldn't afford the competition after the war ....

Thanks Silverity. That is very helpful.

You're welcome. The pre-1920 content is 92.5% to be more accurate.

Batches of junk UK silver are regularly seen on ebay.co.uk. Of course, shipping outside the UK could make them more expensive.

Don't know if this helps, but most coins that look 'silver' in appearance from any country before 1900 are probably 80% to 90% silver.

Mexican pesos are sometimes a good buy as well. The 1947 & 1948 cinco-pesos are 90% with about an ounce of silver.

Also, old silverware is usually composed of sterling at around 90-92% content.
Be aware that German silver is less than sterling at 0.799 fine.

My 0.02 cents. :woohoo:
